Major League Baseball Player, Manager. Born Howard Rodney Edwards, he attended MiraCosta College and served as a medic with the United States Navy which earned him the nickname 'Doc'. On April 21, 1962, he made his Major League debut and during the next eight years, he played parts of five seasons (1962 to 1965 and 1970) at the catcher position with the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. In 317 career regular season games, he compiled 216 hits with a .238 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he served as a coach with the Phillies and would go on to a more than forty-year career as a Minor League manager. He served as the manager of the Cleveland Indians from 1987 until 1989.
