Betty was born and raised in Haddonfield, NJ and later raised her family in Wyncote, PA. She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Bainbridge and Nelson Billington Shivers. Mrs. Browning was preceded in death by her husband, William Cooper Browning, in 1992.
Mrs. Browning attended college at Western Maryland College and believed strongly in the values of Quaker Living. The Browning family has deep rooted ties with Quaker Education, including Germantown Friends School, where her children and husband all attended and Moorestown Friends School, where she attended. Mrs. Browning volunteered as a docent at "Andalusia," the former Biddle estate, and "Stenton," which belonged to Jonathan Logan, the Secretary to William Penn. She initiated guided trolley tours up Germantown Avenue. Betty was a horticulturalist and charter member of the Chestnut Hill Garden Club. She took many blue ribbons at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She was a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club where she was an avid tennis player. She traveled extensively from Alaska to soaring over the South Pole, and everywhere in between.
Mrs. Browning will be remembered for her love of nature and her devotion to learning. Her friendships and family were important to her and she has passed along her legacy to future generations.
Betty was the devoted mother of Elizabeth "Libby" Kuch (Jeffrey Hamilton Kuch) of Granite Falls, NC and W. Nicholson Browning (Rebecca Anne Ramsey) of Lexington, MA. She was the loving Grandmother of Tyson Hamilton Kuch, Abigail Kuch Reynolds (John Zachary Reynolds), Samuel Ramsey Browning (Amy Scheuerman Browning) and Leigh Ramsey Browning. She had one Great-Granddaughter, Elizabeth Emerson Reynolds.
Family is invited to her graveside service on Saturday May 30, 2015 at 10:00 AM at George Washington Memorial Park, 80 Stenton Ave.,Plymouth Meeting, PA. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM in the main auditorium of Foulkeways, 1120 Meetinghouse Road, Gwynedd, PA.
