Death of Mrs. Mary Lombard.
Died, at the home of her son, Sumner J.
Lombard of Alden, Thursday
evening, Dec. 19, at 9:30 o'clock, of
acute Brights disease, Mrs. Mary
Lombard, at the age of 65 years.
Miss Mary Southwick was born in
Clinton Co., N. Y., in the town of
Moorse near Plattsburgh, December
4, 1836. When seven years old she removed
with her father to Jefferson county,
Wisconsin. In 1858 or '59 she came
to Minnesota where she taught
school after which she returned to
Wisconsin and attended school at
Lone Rock.
On May 8,1862, she was united in
marriage to Mr. Abraham J. Lombard,
at her father's home. Mr. and
Mrs. Lombard came directly to Chatfield
where they made their home
until 1865. At that time Mr. Lombard
entered the ministry and was
state Evangelist. He was sent to
the western part of the state, and
they made their home in Ottawa, Le
Sueur Co., until 1873, when Mr. Lombard
gave up preaching on account
of his voice failing. They returned
to Chatfield, Mr. Lombard entering
into partnership in the hardware
business with his brother, A. M.
Lombard. They afterwards moved
to Wykoff. Mr. and Mrs. Lombard
also spent six years on the Pacific
Coast. At the time of Mrs. Lombard's
death their home was in
Chatfield, but they were visiting at
the home of their son, Sumner, in
Alden.
Mrs. Lombard had been a sufferer
from Bright's disease for some time,
but her symptoms were not alarming.
Friday, Dec. 13, she had one of
her bad attacks, but rallied and
Sunday she thought she was better
than she had been for some time, but
was again taken worse and continued
to grow weaker until her death
on Thursday evening, Dec. 19.
Besides her husband, she is survived
by four children: Elbert of
Wylder, Mont., George F, an engineer
at Wells, Sumner J., banker at
Alden, and Rose E., who at present
is a student at Carleton College.
The oldest son, Elbert, who is on a
ranch in Montana, was unable to be
present at the funeral services. The
rest of the children were present.
The remains were brought to
Chatfield Friday. A prayer service
led by Rev. Sinclair of the
Presbyterian church of Alden,
was held before leaving for
Chatfield. The funeral services
were held in the Presbyterian
church of this city, Saturday
morning, at 10 o'clock, Dr. Allan
Bell officiating. She was laid at
rest in the Chatfield Cemetery beside
those of the family who had been called
before.
Mrs. Lombard was a Christian
woman and was beloved by a large
circle of friends where ever she was
known. In Chatfield where she was
so well known, many friends mourn
her departure and deeply sympathize,
with the bereaved husband and
children.
One great comfort to the sorrow-
ing ones is that the beloved wife and
mother did not suffer much during
the last hours of her illness, but
gradually failed in strength and
seemed to fall peacefully asleep.
