Manuel Faustina, born in Portugal but residing in Hawaii for more than six decades, died just after the New Year in 1944. He was 64 years old.

"DEATHS -- FAUSTINA -- In Hilo Memorial hospital, Jan. 18, Manuel Faustina of 287 [237] Kaumana Rd., husband of Mrs. Minnie Faustina, native of Portugal, watchman, 64 years, 7 months, 6 days old. Buried Jan. 20, in the Homelani cemetery." [Obituary published in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald (Hilo, HI) on Monday, Jan. 31, 1944, p. 6.]

At the tender age of 3, little Manuel Faustino became a part of history when he--together with his baby brother, big sister & his parents--joined the 16,000 Azoreans who emigrated from the Azores Islands to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 19th Century. His family undertook the 7,279-mile voyage in 1883, approximately five years after the first Portuguese set sail. From the island of São (San) Miguel, the trip lasted anywhere from 57 to 130 days, depending if the ship was a bark--sailing ship--or a steamer. In Manuel's case, the boat ride aboard the British steamer S.S. Hankow was a breeze and no doubt an adventure, lasting just over two months. Embarking at the port of São Miguel on May 2nd, 1883, the Faustinos joined the ship on the second leg of its voyage to the New World. At sea for 66 days, the 1,403 immigrants aboard the S.S. Hankow reached the Hawaiian Islands on July 7, 1883, passing into Honolulu Harbor and docking at the Immigration Depot on Fisherman's Point. When the passengers disembarked amid gala celebrations of Royal Hawaiian Band music, hula dancers, and King David Kalakaua's welcome, they knew they were home . . . [Biography by genealogygirl]
