Obituary provided by FAG volunteer Delbert Falsken #47053000 on Sept. 4, 2018. Thanks for the added info.

Louis Stopek passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home.

Louis celebrated his 100th trip around the sun in April with family & friends at the Grand Island Veterans Home, where he was a resident from 2011 until his move to Scottsbluff in mid July 2018. The staff at the GIVH provided excellent care and a loving home during his time with them.

Louis was born in Cedar Rapids.

While working at Goochs Mill in Lincoln he met, fell in love with & married Dorothy Juricek (deceased).
During a recent card game he confessed “I had to marry her, I couldn't get away from her, that woman wouldn't leave me alone.” During their 52 years of marriage they celebrated the birth of 3 children; James (Lincoln), Mary Westrick (deceased) & Sara Schluter (Scottsbluff).

Louis served his country in WWII, receiving the Silver Star, the Bronze Medal of Valor & the Purple Heart during tours of duty in Africa & Europe.

They were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where they enjoyed the company of many close friends.

Louis worked as a truck driver 'peddling freight' for BN Truck lines in Lincoln for many years.

He retired in 1978 and spent his time fishing, playing cards, gardening, enjoying the outdoors & RVing with “Toots” (Dorothy).

Louis relished imparting his Polish wisdom to his grandchildren; the art of catching frogs, teaching them to drive (20 mile per hour under the speed limit) in the cemetery, how to properly crack black walnuts, & always providing ample sweet confections.

Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be cast to the wind at one of his favorite Lincoln fishing holes and on the beaches of Normandy, France.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 2, Wyuka.
