Robert E. Steinmetz, 83, of Palmyra, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Bob was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Palmyra, to Claude B. and Helen L. (Watkins) Steinmetz.
He married Ruth Ann Crawford on Nov. 9, 1950, in Virden, and she preceded him in death in 1984.
Surviving are three children, Philip E. Steinmetz (Barbara) of Sun City West, Arizona, Sharon L. Apps (Leslie) of Girard, Mark A. Steinmetz (Shelly) of Hettick; four grandchildren, Amanda Jones of Girard, Samantha Miedema of Round Lake, Elizabeth Grider (Matthew) of Palmyra, and Lauren Apps of Girard; 10 step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Steven C. Steinmetz (Carolyn) of Adkins, Texas; brother in law, Delbert Garner of Decatur; and several nieces, nephews; and his most sincere and faithful friends, David Kemp of Farmersville, and Carolyn Walden of Palmyra.
Bob was also preceded in death by one sister, Alice "JoAnn" (Steinmetz) Garner.
Mr. Steinmetz was a member of the Palmyra American Legion Post 1024 and the Palmyra Christian Church.
Bob was a graduate of Northwestern High School in Palmyra, and was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and additional activities such as, dancing, playing cards and golf.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Stults-Neece Chapel in Palmyra. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery where graveside military rites will be conducted by Palmyra American Legion Post. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
