SHIRLEY, JR., DR. EDWIN S., 83, of Miami, died Oct. 1, 2006. Svc. 10/07.

Dr. Edwin Samuel Shirley was a member of the Public Heath Trust Board at Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital and the chairman of the Community Relations Board of Dade county Florida. In 1968 he received the Meritorious Achievement award, the top honor at Florida A & M University. Born and raised in northern Florida, Dr. Shirley was a prominent black member of the community with a general medical and surgical practice. For his medical training he went to Washington, D.C., and then to Staten Island in New York before settling in Miami in 1957 with his wife and children. He had a reputation as a person not afraid to speak his mind and had a long-standing interest in civic affairs. He was deeply involved in civil rights and stood up for the poor, black and Latino communities. He spoke out against discrimination, inequality and police brutality. He was the doctor and good friend of Martin Luther King Jr from 1960 until his death in 1968.
