United Nations Secretary General. He served as the 7th United Nations Secretary General from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2006. He was also the co-recipient, with the United Nations, of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He studied at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana before enrolling at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. It was at Macalester where he earned his bachelor's degree in economics. He later continued his studies at the Institute for Advanced International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He earned his master's degree while a Sloan fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology n 1971-72. He began his career at the United Nations as a budget officer for the World Health Organization in Geneva in 1962. Besides a short stint as director of tourism for Ghana from 1974 to 1976, he spent his entire career at the United Nations. In March of 1993, he was elevated to the post of undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations. While in this position, he distinguished himself during the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1997, he replaced Boutros Boutros-Ghali as secretary general. He would served as secretary general until December of 2006, when he stepped down after two terms. During his tenure, he had to deal with several major issues including global terrorism and the Iraq War. Also during his tenure, he was caught up in the oil-for-food program investigation, but he was cleared of any wrongdoing. He was succeeded by Ban Ki-Moon as secretary general. He would continue working in different areas of international issues for the remainder of his career. He was the co-author of several books and besides the Nobel Peace Prize, was the recipient of several honors. He passed away after a short illness.
