Nancy Ford McDowell
November 2, 1942 - July 11, 2018

It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Nancy Ford Liles McDowell, born on November 2, 1942, announces her passing on July 11, 2018. Her husband, Clyde, and her friends and family remember her as a brilliant artist, an excellent cook, and a witty and vibrant person who always spoke her mind.

Born in Memphis, TN and raised in Rector, AR by her parents Helan and Bill Ford, Nancy attended the University of Arkansas where she pledged Alpha Delta Pi. She married Ronald R. Liles and followed him to the University of South Carolina where she graduated with a degree in fine art. Nancy and Ron made their home in Houston, TX where they welcomed their children, Kristin and Greyson.

Nancy raised Kristin and Greyson mainly on her own. She loved her children fiercely and spent countless hours watching them cultivate their gifts. Greyson was a phenomenal athlete, and Kristin turned heads as a great cheerleader. Nothing made her prouder than watching her children and grandchildren grow, and she shared that pride with her dear friend, Marie Hartnett. For over 35 years, Nancy and Marie uplifted each other through the twists and turns of life and remained thick as thieves until the very end.

Nancy found love and happiness with Clyde H. McDowell when they met in 1995, and the two were married at Unity Church on March 14, 2000. Clyde worked overseas for a number of years, which allowed them to travel together all over the globe, from naturally beautiful Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, to rocky Greece, and wild Kenya. Their favorite vacation spot was Mexico, especially Mérida and Chicxulub. No adventure ever seemed too big to Nancy and Clyde— their bold and intrepid spirits soared from one fantastic destination to the next, and they always returned home loaded with stories and gifts.

Nancy was a talented artist throughout her life, and she taught art classes at home while working for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. While Nancy continued her artistic journey, she spent the next 38 years enjoying her work with the Houston Golf Association starting as an Office Manager and later serving as the Controller. Nancy believed in keeping busy in the gym and at the office. Just one day after she retired from the Houston Golf Association, she took a job as Controller with Champions Country Club. She really enjoyed working and the people who crossed her path.

Nancy valued education, hard work, creativity, and community. She and Clyde built a community with close neighbors, co-workers, and family. Every Sunday night for 23 years or more, Nancy and Clyde cooked fabulous dinners for their family and hungry guests. Nancy’s example of gracious hospitality will live on through her children, Clyde, and Marie.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Clyde, and her best friend Marie Hartnett; daughter, Kristin Poe and her husband, Michael; son, Greyson Liles; grandchildren, Paige Poe, Harrison Poe, Kaela Liles, Emma Liles, Luke Liles, Chloe Liles, Faith Werner, and her dog Max and cat, Belle. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Joseph Bruce Ford, and granddaughter, Eliana Joy Liles.

A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be held on July 28, 1:00 p.m. at Northgate Country Club. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
