Catherine “Kitty” Ballew Dales, 99, of Berkeley Lake, Ga., died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 3, at Gwinnett Medical Center Duluth. Kitty was born in New Orleans, La., on Nov. 14, 1918, to Benjamin Franklin Ballew and Mildred Stewart Ballew. Kitty is survived by her longtime companion, Harry Hollingsworth; her two children, Bertram B. (Ann) Dales III of Albuquerque, N.M., and Dana C. Dales of Berkeley Springs, W.V.; two grandchildren, Scott B. (April) Dales and Julie A. (Joni) Dales; two great-grandchildren; and a niece, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bertram B. Dales Jr., and her sister, Martha Ballew Pettway.

Kitty and Bert met while Bert was enrolled at Georgia Tech. They were married at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta on Nov. 4, 1939.

Kitty held down the fort, as only a military wife can, while her husband served in the U.S. Army through World War II and Korea, as well as an assignment in Southeast Asia. As her husband was assigned to different posts, Kitty moved with him, living in Japan and numerous places across the United States until his retirement.

In 1964, Kitty and Bert moved to Berkeley Lake, Ga. Over the course of the next five decades, Kitty’s natural extroversion, generosity, and commitment to service made her a fixture in the community, whether it was as a volunteer at the local polling place, a member of the BLOSOMS, or an altar guild member. She volunteered with the Gray Ladies at the Veterans’ Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels for years. If there was something happening in the community, Kitty was sure to be in the middle of the action. Known as The Lady of Lake Berkeley, her love of life and positive spirit affected all who came into contact with her.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, to the Lake Berkeley Chapel (for Kitty’s Corner in the Gratitude Garden), or to a charity of your choice.
