Grace’s passion in life was her art, and bringing joy to others with the beauty she created. Her talent was recognized early. As a high school senior at Mumford she won the National Scholastic Gold Medal in Art, which was presented to her by Governor Nelson Rockefeller at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This was accompanied by a college scholarship and the incorporation of the winning artwork in a museum collection in New York. Grace’s oeuvre ranged widely – from prints, to watercolors, to photography. She was especially proud of her pastel renditions of the many parrots in her menagerie, which were exhibited widely and published in book form. In more recent years, Grace developed a deep commitment to human rights and animal welfare, serving as the President of United for Human Rights, Florida.
Grace is survived by her husband of 30 years, Garry Roberts; her brothers and sister-in-laws Aaron and Nechama Bennish; Michael and Marie-Christine Bennish; and Joseph and Harriet Bennish; many loving nieces and nephews; and friends and colleagues throughout the world whose lives she enriched in many ways.
Funeral services will be held at Hebrew Memorial Chapel, 26640 Greenfield Road, Oak Park, MI 48237 on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at 1pm.
Please omit flowers. Contributions in her memory may be sent to Gilchrist Hospice Care, 11311 McCormick Road, Suite 350, Hunt Valley, MD 21031 or the charity of your choice.
