Miss Alice H. Wightman of Williamsville died Tuesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 97.

Miss Wightman grew up in Eden and graduated from North Collins High School in 1925. She earned her teaching degree from Fredonia State Teacher's College in 1928 and taught in Lakewood from 1928 to 1930 and in Eden from 1931 to 1940. In response to the country's plea for nurses at the onset of World War II, Miss Wightman went back to school to earn her nursing degree. Starting at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, she was a nurse from 1940 to 1945, becoming assistant head nurse at Strong in 1946. She graduated from University of Rochester School of Nursing that same year. From there she went to New York University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in 1954. At that time, she was with the Visiting Nurse Services of New York, first as a staff nurse and finally as a supervisor.

In 1955, she was appointed assistant professor of nursing at Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Western Reserve University as a joint appointment with University Hospitals of Cleveland. She was the public health nurse in the group clinic where medical students learned an integrated approach to the cooperative roles of the nurse, social worker and physician.

In 1964, Miss Wightman came to the University at Buffalo as assistant professor of public health nursing. She retired in 1973.Miss Wightman traveled extensively throughout Europe. She was a nature lover, especially of birds and flowers. She was interested in current affairs, often sending news clippings to her many nieces and nephews. She loved poetry and was active in her church, Christ United Methodist Church in Amherst.

Survivors include two brothers, George of Burlington, N.C., and John of Beaver Creek, Ohio. Funeral services were held today in the Baptist Church of Eden, Eden. Burial will be this spring in Eden Evergreen Cemetery.
