Louis "Marty" Martinez, age 83, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2018.

He was born on August 15, 1934 in Wagon Mound, New Mexico.

He served 22 years in the submarine service of the US Navy, retiring to San Angelo in 1976.

As a graduate of Angelo State University, he worked as the business manager for Concho Valley Center for Human Advancement.

He married Elizabeth "Betty" Singletary in January 1966. Together they enjoyed spending time with family, sharing a meal, or just visiting over a cup of coffee. He often teased and irritated her, but he also loved her deeply. He held her hand as she passed away in December 2013.

Marty was a great storyteller, and he found humor in most everything. The familiar sound of his laughter will be greatly missed. Marty was a gracious host and loved to serve his homemade New Mexico-style enchiladas. He also had the amazing ability to turn containers of leftovers into a gourmet meal.

As a father, he was a pillar of strength and wisdom. His daughters were the center of his world, at least until the grandchildren came along and stole the show. His witty expressions and "Marty mannerisms" will live on forever in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters Trina Close of Idaho and Rachel Alexander of Massachusetts, and stepchildren Jeanie Daniel, Sharon Ridgeway, and Kevin Sweitzer. Marty has 10 grandchildren: Ella, Jenny, Leah, Jaden, Peter, Lizzie, Jonas, Justin, David, and Lynn.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to Blenda Huber for the years of her selfless caretaking of our father and mother. Adriana and Lupe, thank you for your visits and unyielding friendships.

Visitation will be held all day Friday, August 17, 2018 at the funeral home with family present from 4-6 pm. Funeral services for Marty will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Shaffer Funeral Home's Sherwood Way Chapel, 1939 Sherwood Way with interment to follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meals for the Elderly in San Angelo.
