Army Sgt. Weiss was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Weiss died of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Andy attended West Lafayette High School in Lafayette, Indiana and Vincennes University where he obtained a degree in building construction in 2000. Following that he worked a few construction jobs but jobs were few and far between. In order to provide for his family, he decided to join the military in late 2001. Besides security for his family, he found the military provided the purpose in life he had been looking for. He was an excellent soldier and found the cavalry was right for him. He planned to turn his work in the military into a career and become a recruiter in the Lafayette area when he returned. Andy reenlisted this year and was in the early part of his second tour of duty in Iraq.
