Consecration of Church of England at Woodville

The Ceremony of consecrating the new Church of England took place on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation of local adherents and visitors from other parts of the province. The edifice is situate at 15 chains from the junction towards the Gorge, fronting what in the good old times was called simply Napier Road, but now goes by the more civilised appellation of "Vogel Street". The structure is in the Gothic style and has been erected after the design and under the superintendence of Messrs Atkins and Clere, of Wanganui, architects to the Wellington Diocese. The contractor for the erection being Mr F. Burbush. The design is, however, only executed in part the chancel and steeple being left out for the time being for want of sufficient funds. The cost of erection &c., according to the whole design is estimated at £1100 (July 2018 equivalent of $220.000); the part now finished costs £400. It is a compact and pretty church which at a pinch would be able to hold about 350 people. The only thing to be regretted is the site of the church which, being low, does not give a fair impression of the tout'ensemble of the edifice.
About 3.30 the ceremony itself was commenced by the Bishop of Waipa supported by the following ministers:- Rev J. C. Eccles (Waipawa), Rev J. D. Knipe) Waipukurau, Rev A. S. Webb (Ormondville), Rev de Berdt Hovell (Napier), Rev E. Robertshaw (Curate of Woodville), Rev Mr St Hill (Havelock), Bishop's Chaplain, who marched in procession ..
Following gentlemen were elected as Vestry:- Messrs G. L. Rabone, W. Bickerton, F. Burbush, H. Elliott, Copland C. Davis and R. J. Carvery

An action was tried at Woodville on Saturday last in which Mr G. L. Rabone sued Mr W. W. McCardle for the sum of £92 8s for breach of agreement in not fulfilling his contract to transfer certain sections in the Mangahao survey district to the plaintiff. Mr Rabone in his evidence said that he went to Pahiatua for the purpose of buying land, when he saw Mr mcCardle there, who advised him to wait awhile, as he was putting land into Mr Sian's hands for sale, as he wished to get some Woodville people to buy the land, so that they might vote for him at the next election. Afterwards he took two sections and bespoke four more. After a long hearing judgment was given for the plaintiff for £58 14s 4d and costs £11 5s 8d
