Death Ends the Sufferings of Mrs. Phoebe Hart
Mrs. Phoebe Hart, widow of Alexander T. Hart, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. L. Briggs, in this village, on Saturday, May 11.
Mrs. Hart had been in poor health a long time, her recent illness dating from December last. No hope had been entertained for her recovery for quite a period, although all that medical skill could accomplish was done.. At times she was a great sufferer. She bore these sufferings with great fortitude and resignation. Death came as a welcome messenger.
Phoebe Cole was born in Panama Village, Chautauqua Co. N. Y., March 7, 1829. In childhood she came west with her parents and was married to Alexander Hart, Jan. 6, 1849. With her husband she experienced many of the hardships and privations of pioneer life, and did her full part in the transformation of the country. She was the mother of seven children, five of whom are living: Mrs. Mary Julian of Rockford, Mrs. Mildred Davidson of Lyons, Ia., Mrs. Margaret Brown of Salem, Ore. Mrs. Addie Loomer of Donnelly, Minn., and Mrs. Jessie Briggs of Rockton. Mr. Hart passed away Nov. 5, 1905.
The funeral services occurred at the home on Monday afternoon, attended by the pastor of the Baptist church. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the village cemetery.
Among the friends from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Julian and sons, Mrs. E. E. Hart, Mrs. Emma Blough and daughter Olive, Mrs. Westgate, Mrs. Rock, Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Jenkins, Misses Alice and Lottie Balderson of Rockford; M. and M. Davidson of Lyons, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kerlin of Freeport, and Mr. and Mrs. Steward Sample of Owen.
