Prior to that he served as Bishop of the Diocese of Chipata (1970 until 1996) and Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lusaka (1996 until 2006). In November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the status of Cardinal-Priest of Santa Emerenziana a Tor Fiorenza. He died at the age of 81.
