His last name was originally Caudill. Some relatives went to a Caudill reunion in Kentucky several years ago. They asked how the name got changed to Cordell. They were told the ones who had money and moved to Missouri changed it to Cordell. They laughed as the money didn’t make it to their generation. It’s possible the way they pronounced it sounded like Cordell. It is not known for sure if Sampson and Elizabeth are buried here as the cemetery was destroyed and most of the stones were removed. Fortunately, descendants of Irvin & Martha Cordell saved the stones that were placed in concrete and surrounded by a fence.
Sampson's birth year comes from census records and his death month and year come from his estate settlement. A coffin was purchased for him June 1,1865.*SAMPSON CAUDILL
