Elżbieta Krzesińska won the gold medal in the women's long jump at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, equaling the world record (6.35 metres) she had set three months earlier in Budapest. Four years later, in Rome, she won the silver medal. Additionally, she won the Polish championships in long jump seven times between 1952 and 1963, as well as national titles in the 80m hurdles (1957) and pentathlon (1953, 1962). She lived in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s.
