Bessie is a very complicated person to research, but I think when her mother died when she was a little girl, her father wasn't able to take care of her or her sister, so she was adopted by Henry Schoonover and Rosa Highfield. She was living with them in 1910 in Sullivan County, IN. She is listed as their step-daughter, so I am assuming Rosa had adopted her first?
