On May 18, 1935, the propaganda passenger aircraft Tupolev ANT-20 "Maxim Gorky" and three more planes were performing a demonstration flight over Moscow, Russia. As a result of a poorly executed loop maneuver by a an accompanying I-5 Fighter which collided into the "Maxim Gorky", both planes crashed into a low-rise residential neighborhood. Forty-five people were killed in the crash, including crew members and thirty-three family members of some of those who had built the aircraft. In a state funeral to those whom lost their lives in the incident the monument was dedicated to their memory with bronze plaques over each of the graves.
