Barker, Barbara Jean

Barbara Jean "BJ" Barker, age 73, of Denver, Colo., passed away on Aug. 6, after a hard-fought battle with congestive heart failure.

She was born to the late Esperanza and Jesus Martinez in Walsenburg, Colo., on Nov. 21, 1944.

She was predeceased by brothers, Jerry and Harvey Martinez and a niece, Carrie Ruskin.

While BJ did not have the opportunity to attend college, she did not let that stop her from having a very successful career in the financial industry. She began her career as an executive assistant at AG Edwards and retired as a Branch Manager for Dain Rauscher.

She will be remembered by many as a wonderful mentor and colleague.

BJ loved hiking. In 2017, despite her condition, she hiked the Camino de Santiago. BJ also enjoyed spending time with all of her wonderful friends. She belonged to a Park Hill Dinner club, a book club, and a "Birthday Babies" group.

After surviving two bouts with cancer, BJ volunteered at Rose Medical Center to help guide others through their recovery. She was a board member of Mi Casa and volunteered in her church, Mother of God, as a reader.

BJ will be remembered for her strength, perseverance and ability to influence others to do the same and for her contributions to the community. She will be particularly remembered as a loving mother to her two sons.

BJ is survived by sons, Adam Barker and his wife, Elke Jarboe and Bret Barker and his wife, Ashley McCarthy. She had four grandchildren, Anthony, Claudia, Scout and Riley. BJ is also survived by her brother, Wilbert and his wife, Norma and their three children, Cheryl, Sherri and Randy. In addition, BJ is survived by her sister, Sophie Ruskin and her husband, Jerry and their two daughters, Stacy Ruskin and Brandi Moore and her husband, David and their children, Carly and Brady Moore.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 25, Mother of God Church. Reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society.
