Claus emigrated from Hanover, Germany to the 1849 California Gold Rush (probably by sailing around Cape Horn, South America) - arriving before 1867 per the birth of first child, Herman. Claus had a Dillon Township, Siskiyou County, California Voter Registration dated 05 Oct 1868.

Claus was b.1831/32 Hanover, Germany per 1880 Census of Dillon Township (Cottage Grove Post Office, south of Happy Camp and about 29 crow-fly miles north of Somes Bar), Siskiyou County, California). He married Mary ______, b.1839/40 California (per 1880 Census), a “River Indian” of the Klamath and Salmon River area near the town of Somes Bar, Happy Camp Township, Siskiyou County. The date of death of his wife, Mary, was unknown to this writer. The indigenous people of that area were the Karuk tribe. The first gold rush miners arrived there in 1852.

Claus’ parents were: Peter ALBARS, 1785-1868 and Cathrina Dorothy STRUSS, b.1786, d.unknown, both of Hanover, Germany.
