Brodie was born in Liverpool, immigrated to Ottawa in 1910, graduated from McGill Faculty of Medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha, 1928. While working for the New York City Health Department, 1935, Brodie made a polio vaccine from the spinal cords of monkeys. Three children developed polio after receiving the vaccine. Brodie subsequently left the Health Department and took a position in Detroit, where he died. He is interred in the Jewish Cemetery on Metcalfe Road in Ottawa. Cause of death: coronary thrombosis.
