Mary was born the same year that Mary's older sister who was also named Mary had passed away. This renaming a baby after a sibling which had died often was the custom of the times. In 1846 the year that Mary II died she also lost her mother Mary Ann Coppenbarger Butler to black measles, a decease which was known under the guises of spotted fever,' 'black fever,' and 'black tongue' but which today is believed to be Spotted Rocky Mountain fever.
