COPENHAGEN — Robert G. Spaulding Jr., 73, of 10204 Fleming Road, died Tuesday evening at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he had been a patient for two days.

Mr. Spaulding was employed at Knowlton Bros., Watertown, for 17 years and then worked at Champion International, Deferiet, for 19 years before he retired.

Born May 15, 1934, in Thomaston, Maine, son of Robert Gordon Sr. and Arlene Smith Spaulding, he graduated from Thomaston High School in 1952. After high school, he played baseball in the Boston Red Sox farm club system.

Mr. Spaulding served in the Air Force during the Korean War era, from 1954 to 1957.

He married Marjorie Fleming on Nov. 9, 1957, at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Earl W. Nichols officiating. She died April 11, 2002.

He was a life member of the North American Hunting Club, the National Rifle Association and American Legion Post 1, Albany.

He was known for his humor and storytelling, enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening and was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Katherine and Robert Stackel, Watertown; four sons and three daughters-in-laws, William and Paula, Great Bend, Dr. Richard "Mark," Scottsdale, Ariz., and James and Robin and Thomas and Roxanne, all of Copenhagen; a brother, Philip, Cushing, Maine; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Charlene Anderson, Thomaston, Jeanene Bartlett, Westminster, Mass., Anita and Fred Cullen, Rockland, Maine, and Carolyn and Owen Ward, Wellfleet, Mass.; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Joseph, died at birth.

A celebration of his life will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Keddy's Restaurant, West Carthage. The body will be cremated. Burial will be at later date. Anyone who is unable to attend the service but would like to share a memory can send an e-mail to [email protected] to be read at the celebration.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
