William H. (Will) Brown was born in Jersey City, Hudson Co. NJ, to Adelia McMAHON Brown and Edward Epworth Brown. Will married Arline F. MOORE on 19 December 1894 in Jersey City. The marriage was performed by the Rev. John L. Scudder, pastor of First Congregational Church.
Arline was the daughter of Hester NORWOOD Moore and George W. Moore. Will and Arline's daughter, Dorothy A. BROWN, was born 31 October 1897.
Will's wife, Arline, saved several hundred letters that had been written primarily to her from 1889 to 1937, many of them from Will when he lived and worked in Hackensack NJ and then Auburn NY from 1903 to 1905.
Will's letters described his lonely life living away from Arline and his daughter, and his relentless search to find a satisfying job. In mid-1905 Will landed a job as an electrician in Newark, Essex Co. NJ, where he lived and worked until his death.
After Arline's dad died, her mother lived with Will and Arline but mostly only to keep house for Will when Arline would take daughter Dorothy to the country during the summer. When Arline and Dorothy came back home, Hester would spend time visiting her friends and family in New Jersey and New York. Many of the letters Arline saved are from her mother, who describes her travel experiences in great detail.
Will is buried next to the graves of his mother-in-law's sister, Elizabeth E. NORWOOD, and her husband, Caleb A. Crockett. Arline's burial place is unknown.
