Born 26 May 1934 at The Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois to the parents of George Elmer and Anne Marie (Intribus) Colvin. A 1952 graduate of Niles High School she married Wesley Oliver Tonkin on December 27, 1952 in Howard Township, Cass County, Michigan. After living a short time in Cass and on Howard Street in Niles, they moved to and lived at 3421 Wyant Road in Niles for most of their lives until his passing in December 14, 2010. She later moved in 2011 at the home of and under the care of her loving daughter, Lisa, in Daleville, Indiana until her passing at 12:20 am.

In her childhood, she helped her family make cement blocks. She was a bank teller for First National Bank, employed at National Standard and Electro-Voice for short periods then, after being an empty-nester, Northwest Fabric in South Bend and Niles Walmart fabric department before retirement.

She is survived by a sister, Barbara Seaman of York, South Carolina and two half-sisters, Rhonda Knight of Niles and Corrine "Sis" Bellman of Nappanee, Indiana. Preceding her in death is a sister, Virginia Fedeli and half brother George Harry Colvin.

She is also survived by sons, Kevin (Sherri) and Brian (Linda) both of Niles, MI and David of Three Rivers, MI and a daughter, Lisa (Bobby) Batson of Daleville, Indiana. Seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Kyle, Ashley, Christina, Alisha, and Alexis and nine great-grand children, Olivia, Hunter, Elisha, Dwayne and Dominic, Raegan, Bailey, Corban and Weston.

Mrs. Tonkin was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, Niles, MI.

She was an avid dancer who dined and danced in her earlier years with her husband. She loved to paint, hunt, fish and play cards, especially euchre having played at clubs with Wes and doing very well. She enjoyed sewing and quilting having made hundreds of items for donation to local hospitals and charities. She loved her flowers and vegetable gardens, always canning and freezing since she was a depression era child. She worked very hard all her life with a labor of love for those she cared so much for.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family gathering to join her with her husband in Niles.
