Evangelist Don DuMont dies
Edition: Chicago Tribune
DON DuMONT, 73, a once successful businessman who became known in recent years as a perpetually unsuccessful candidate for political office, died Thursday in his home at 3912 W. Diversey Av.
His death from cancer came during a campaign as a write-in candidate for President in the November election. Last year he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for mayor. Before that he had run for President, United States senator, governor, mayor, alderman, and other offices.
Mr. DuMont was a 1924 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N. Y.
His brother, Allen, who died in 1965, invented television's cathode ray tube and was president of the DuMont Television Network.
DON DuMONT operated one of the largest marine businesses on the East Coast until it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1938.
After spending several years trying to put the pieces back together, Mr. Du-Mont came to Chicago and underwent a religious experience in 1949 that launched his subsequent career as an evangelist and candidate for public office.
"He was trying to bring a spiritual reawakening to America through the political process," said his son, Bruce. "He was practicing what Jimmy Carter is preaching today."
He is survived by his widow, Helen; two sons, James and Bruce; a daughter, Mrs. Donna Burns; a step-son, Walter; a brother, a sister, and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at 4338 W. Fullerton Av. Record Number: 19760917ob010
