Margaret Catherine (Theiss) Byrd, Hagerstown, Md. went peacefully to be with the Lord from her home in Leitersburg surrounded by her family on July 22, 2018.

She was born April 8, 1923 in Lander, Md. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Mathias Theiss and Nola Mae Pearl Theiss.

She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1940 and married her husband of 65 years, Harold Byrd in El Paso, Texas on Jan. 14, 1944.

She worked at Fairchild Aircraft and Pangborn Corp.

She was a member of the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co Auxiliary, Leitersburg Grange, Leitersburg Homemakers, Leitersburg Civic Association and a member of St. Paul’s Free Lutheran Church in Leitersburg.

She printed the Leitersburg Senior Citizens Newsletter since 1998, under the pen name of A. Nonnie Mouse.

Margaret was instrumental in helping start the Leitersburg Peach Festival in 1980 and helped make quilts for the Peach Festival from 1981 until 2004.

Margaret’s interests were gardening, painting, sewing, helping others, collecting dolls, as well as anything and everything that caught her eye.

Margaret and Harold traveled all over the United States with their children and later in life together they traveled all around the world.

Margaret is survived by her two children, son, Douglas Byrd and wife, Kimberly, and daughter, Lynda Asbury and husband, Benny; three grandchildren, Jessica Griffin and companion, William, Wade Byrd and wife, Andrea, and Keith Byrd; five great-grandchildren, Warren Waybright, Evan Byrd, Wesley Byrd, Aliah Sprankle, and Sean Nichols; and many nieces and nephews; her very close friends, Connie Bell, Sue Adams, Jannetta Kline, Gracie Myers, Loretta Long, Kim Smallhorn, Evelyn, Mark, and the Trovinger family, Warren Frusher and Marie, Tim McCoy and many more.

The family would like to acknowledge Liz Nelson, “Busy Lizzie” who quickly became one of mom’s favorite people and a wonderful addition to our family.

Margaret was preceded in death by husband, Harold P. Byrd, in 2008; sister, Pearl E. Frye, in 1993; brother, John T. Theiss, in 1986, and sister, Dorothy Mae Henry, in 2013.

Margaret will be remembered for good spirit and sense of humor, as she loved to joke, laugh, and smile, as well as her creative mind, artistry, compassion, patience, and gentleness. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Margaret chose to donate her body to science.

A celebration of life memorial in her honor will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co. Activities Center, 21140 Leitersburg Pike, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
