Leo M. Beck, 82, of Mitchell, died Friday, March 21, 2008, at the Mitchell Care Center, with family by his side. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the Jones Mortuary Chapel in Mitchell, with Pastor Dr. Charles Richardson officiating. Interment will follow at Mitchell Cemetery with Graveside Rites offered by the Nebraska National Guard. Memorials may be offered to Prairie Haven Hospice, American Legion Post 124 in Mitchell or to the donor's choice.
Leo was born on July 2, 1925, in Newport, Neb. to Lester and Hattie (Brown) Beck. He received his education in Newport, graduating from the Newport Public Schools. Following graduation, Leo was drafted in to the United States Army, where he served from July of 1943 until his honorable discharge in November of 1945. Leo served in the European Theater of War where he was injured in Maurice, France, for which he received the Purple Heart.
Leo also received the Good Conduct Award, American Theater Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal with one Bronze Star. He returned to Nebraska following his time in the service, settling in Scottsbluff. Leo married Theona Johnson on August 6, 1945, in Mitchell. He worked for Valley Motor before he opened up his own business in Mitchell called L & M Motor Supply in 1960.
In 1965, Leo sold his business in Mitchell and returned to Valley Motor Warehouse as part owner and remained until his retirement in 1985.
Leo was a past member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed his memberships at the American Legion Post 124 in Mitchell and the Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid woodworker and took great pride and joy in his yard. You could often find his dog Buddy along side Leo as he worked in his yard in Mitchell. He was a loving father and grandfather, always having a story for his family and friends.
Leo is survived by his wife, Theona Beck of Mitchell; children, Terry Beck of Mitchell, Leona Groskopf and her husband Vern of Scottsbluff, and Peggy Hessler and her husband Bob of Scottsbluff; grandchildren, Andy Groskopf; Megan Pieper and her husband, Jim; Halee Hessler and her fiancé, Greg Brown; and Danielle Darnell and her husband, Jon; great-granddaughter, Joslyn Darnell; sister, Faye Hall of Ft. Collins, Colo.; sisters-in-law, Darlene Francescato of Mitchell and Joella Johnson of Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents; sister, Lillian Lashmett and brother, Howard Beck preceded Leo in death.
