Born in Macon, Illinois, J. W. Nichols served in World War I as a first sergeant and again in World War II as a major. He moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1917 and started the J. W. Nichols Poultry Company in 1921. The processing plant's last location was at 899 N. Houston St. The output increased from 30 chickens per day in 1921 to 30,000 chickens per day in 1975 when he sold the business. He was often seen driving his 1901 Oldsmobile replica, which he used for advertising.

After retiring from the poultry business, he remained active in the Julian Feild Masonic Lodge, serving as worshipful master in 1982. At age 92 he was the oldest worshipful master in Masonic records worldwide.

In 1983 he moved to the Trinity Terrace retirement community in Fort Worth, where he lived happily until his peaceful death in 1990 at age 99.
