Lynn Ferrin James, 92, a true American rancher, rode into the sunset for the last time on a beautiful spring day, Saturday April 28, 2018. Close the pasture gate. We know Dad now is preparing the way for Mom to join him.

Dad is the son of Ferris William James and Vera Arnetta Carter James. He is the husband of Marcile Roberts James, who survives him. Dad was born in Brigham City, Utah, and was raised in the ranching community of Park Valley, Utah, located in western Box Elder County. He was a world-renowned scientist in animal poisonous plant research, although in a sense he never truly left the family ranch. Dad spent virtually his entire life helping his parents on their cattle ranch and then continuing with his own ranch after his parents became too elderly to continue theirs.

Dad inspired all with whom he associated to be honest, work hard and live a good life. He taught his children to be the best they could be, and he believed and taught that we can all achieve whatever dreams we set our minds to. Dad frequently observed, "There is always room at the top."

Dad placed a high value on education and instilled that value in each of his children. He obtained bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees from Utah State University and studied at Cornell University.

Dad served our country honorably during WWII in the Navy. Dad met Mom soon after he started school at Utah State. They became fast friends. Dad proposed, but they both decided first to serve LDS missions. Dad served a full-time mission to the Great Lakes Mission. When he returned from his mission, Dad headed to the Roberts' home with a ring. Mom and Dad were married and sealed for time and eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in August 1952.

They enjoyed 65 years of marriage together. Early in their marriage, Dad and Mom taught for a year in a small, rural schoolhouse located in Grouse Creek, Utah. The school kids ranged in age from elementary to secondary education. This was one of their favorite experiences together.

Dad helped found and establish, and then directed for almost 40 years, the USDA Poisonous Plant Research Laboratory, a unique and world-renowned research facility located in Logan, Utah. Dad gave over 50 years of service to the U.S government. Dad was an adjunct professor for many years in the USU Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences Department and was inducted into the USU College of Agriculture's Hall of Honor.

Dad was an active, dedicated member of the LDS Church his entire adult life. His favorite calling was Gospel Doctrine teacher, where he served for over 25 years. Dad and Mom served two missions to Martin's Cove in Wyoming after he retired.

Far more important to Dad than any of his own accomplishments, which were numerous, were the accomplishments and well-being of his children. Dad is survived by his six children, of whom he was extremely proud: MarLynn (Dave) Gardner of Orem, Utah; Dr. Randy (Ruth) James of Caldwell, Idaho; David James of Hyde Park, Utah; Mark (Paige) James of West Bountiful, Utah; Lisa (Neal) Oman of Issaquah, Washington; and Rebekah (Mike) Nielsen of Hyde Park, Utah.

In addition to a tremendous clan of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to whom he will continue providing direction from above, Dad leaves behind a most excellent herd of high-quality cattle.

Funeral services with be held at noon Friday, May 4, 2018, at the Hyde Park church house located at 535 E. 200 South, Hyde Park, Utah. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. that morning. Interment will be in the Hyde Park City Cemetery.
