Matthew S. Cox, age 57, passed away in the Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Natick, Massachusetts on September 21, 1960, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Mary E. (Maguire) Cox.
He spent his early years in Natick prior to moving to Wellesley as a young boy. Matt graduated from Wellesley High School with the Class of 1978. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country, and was stationed in Germany.
Matt returned to his hometown of Natick following his honorable discharge in 1984, however, he soon relocated to Dallas, Texas, where he began his career in telecommunications. After spending a couple of years in Texas, Matt traveled back to Massachusetts, settling in Weymouth in the late 1980s. He continued working in telecommunications while attending night school at Northeastern University in Boston.
It was while he was studying at Northeastern that he met his wife to be, Cynthia L. Crooker in 1991. Shortly after meeting Cindy, Matt left Northeastern to pursue an opportunity to start a telecommunications company, called Data Cable Networks, however, he and Cindy continued seeing each other and were married on October 28, 1995 in Saint Jerome's Church in North Weymouth. The young couple initially made their home together in Canton, Massachusetts before settling in Norfolk, Massachusetts in 1997, where they welcomed their two children, Nicholas and Elizabeth. In 2010, Matt set out on a new career path in the telecommunications field, serving as an independent consultant for various companies.
Throughout his life, Matt loved being outdoors. As a young man he enjoyed skiing, traveling throughout New England and to Colorado in search of the best black diamond route. He passed his love for the slopes onto his son, Nick, teaching him how to conquer even the most difficult runs. While the winters were fun, Matt truly looked forward to his annual hiking and camping trip each July in Maine. The trip initiated as three cousins traveling to the backwoods of Baxter State Park or Arcadia State Park, to find a new trail to hike or new site to set up camp. After welcoming his children, the traditional men's trip took on a family feel, and Matt loved teaching both Nick and Elizabeth to appreciate the beauty of nature. No summer would be complete without a visit to Chapin Memorial Beach in Dennis or Horseneck Beach in Westport, where Matt would spend countless hours working on his tan. His love for the beach did not end as the colder months came around, he simply found the warm climate of the Caribbean, where he could relax on the beaches of St. Martin. Back at home, Matt enjoyed reading, taking an interest in both history and science fiction.
