Phillip Brittain was born in Burke Co., NC , was married 2 Sep, 1823 and was the father of 10 children. In the War of 1812 Phillip was Captain of one of three companies of the 10th US Inf Reg't. On 14 Nov 1829 Phillip deeded to four others land for the Mills River Presbyterian Church. Phillip served as a member of the NC legislature from Buncombe Co. in 1810, 1811, 1816, 1817, 1823, 1824 and 1838. In 1838 Phillip was one of three to introduce a bill to establish Henderson Co. from Buncombe Co. He was buried in the Brittain family cemetary in Mills River which was destroyed.
