Sandy was born December 31, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from All Saints Episcopal School in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where she was Valedictorian of her class and later attended LSU. She returned to school in her 50’s to complete her Master’s degree in English Literature at UL after her lengthy career in fashion retail. Sandy enjoyed mentoring and inspiring students as Adjunct Professor for several years in the English Department at UL where she shared her love for writing with her students. She also served as president of Friends of The Humanities and gave her support and time to the Gaines Foundation. Sandy made it possible for Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Gaines to visit inner city students at Murray Wright High School in Detroit, Michigan upon completion of their summer study program of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

Sandra, better known as Sandy, opened her store, Sandy Austin Ltd. in Lafayette in the 70’s as a small boutique on Johnston Street. She later expanded the exclusive woman’s boutique to a 17,000 square-footage store in Acadiana Mall where many featured designers were introduced to Lafayette for the first time. Sandy’s fundraising efforts included memorable fashion shows for numerous organizations including the American Heart Society and the Lafayette Symphony & Orchestra, just to name a few. Sandy was on the Board of Directors for several civic organizations including the Episcopal School of Acadiana, Hospice of Acadiana, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, Lafayette Town House and Ascension Episcopal Church. She was a charter member of “The Trailblazers”, a group of outstanding women who make a difference. Sandy was comfortable in any crowd, always making everyone feel they were the most important person in her life. She appreciated theater, music and literature and inspired her children and grandchildren with her creativity and enthusiasm for the arts.

She was passionate about sharing her love for the Bible through home church groups and small group Bible studies. Her faith and personal relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was an inspiration to others as she served Him with her gift of hospitality. She gave credit to the Lord who walked her through her eight-year journey with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia. His strength, grace and peace were evident to those who knew her during this difficult part of her life. Sandy was known for her public image but what she did in private was her real legacy. She had a heart for those who were forgotten and in need, often bringing communion to those who were homebound and in nursing homes. Her kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity touched the lives of many without anyone knowing except the recipient. When she believed in someone or something, she gave it her all. Whether it was Bible study, fundraising or supporting family or friends, she gave her full heart and dedication. Sandy was a visionary, able to see all possibilities when others couldn’t. Her positive outlook always affected those around her with her quick wit, sense of humor and dimpled smile. She will be missed by her many friends and family but there is no question she is now celebrating in eternal freedom and joy at the banquet table of our Lord in His glorious presence.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Marshall E. Mugnier of Lafayette; her three children, Victoria Austin, Elizabeth Austin Eppler and Stephen Austin; four stepchildren, Andrea Mugnier, Paul Mugnier, Nicole Mugnier Brunson and Jon Mugnier and eight grandchildren, Jordan Eppler Fowler, Alexandra Eppler Williams, Austin Eppler, Sonja Mugnier, Andrew Mugnier, Thomas Brunson, Lindsey Austin and Lauren Austin. Her first great-grandson, Jacob brought her much joy these past few months. She worked to bring her family together with her unconditional love and her legacy lives on in each one of her loved ones.
