Obituary for Edward Addison Gill
Edward Addison Gill, of Salem, Missouri, passed away on July 31, 2018 in Bowling Green, Ohio surrounded by his family. Ed was born on his father’s farm on October 11, 1918 in Dent County, Missouri. He was the only child of Charles Elliott Gill and Myrtle Hayes Gill.
Ed attended elementary school in Salem, Dent County, and Cape Girardeau, graduating from Salem High School in 1935. He attended the University of Missouri—Columbia and received a BS in Education. He majored in chemistry and minored in general science and math. Upon graduation, he accepted his first teaching assignment with the New Hope school at a salary of $135/month. In 1941, he enlisted in the US Navy and received training at Penn State College for diesel engineering. In January, 1942, he was called to active duty. He was commissioned Ensign-USNR in May 1942. After several months of shore duty, he was assigned to a minesweeper (USS YMS 348) as an engineering officer. In 1943, his squadron was sent to Europe, and on D-Day, June 6, 1944, ships of his squadron led the assault on Utah Beach, clearing the mines for landing craft from staging areas to the beach. After returning to the States, he held several teaching assignments including one year as professor of N.S. &T. at the University of Pennsylvania until his discharge in 1946 as Lt. Sr. Grade.
After discharge, he was employed as a credit reporter by Dunn and Bradstreet. He then opened his first shoe store in partnership with Bud Thrower in Sullivan, Missouri . In 1950, he moved to Salem, Missouri and continued his retail business. In 1951, the partnership was dissolved, and Ed and his wife, Eileen, continued to operate Gill’s Store for over 42 years. After closing his business, Ed found retirement boring and went to work at JC Penney in Rolla. He worked there until he was 88 years old.
On February 10, 1948, Ed married Eileen Campbell. Ed and Eileen had four children: David, Gene, Marla, and Gregory. Ed and Eileen were long-time members of the Salem United Methodist Church serving in many capacities. Both were members of the Masonic Orders, and Ed was a 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Ed and Eileen were charter members of the Dent County Historical Society. They enjoyed bridge, art, and music. Ed was an avid cyclist and participated in rides of up to 100 miles a day. His longest ride in one day was 120 miles. His last 100 mile ride occurred when he was 74 years old. Ed helped mark the “Trail of Tears” across Dent County and helped publish several volumes of the Ozark Heritage. He helped establish the Dent County Museum and the Bonebrake Center. He was also instrumental in establishing the ABC Cemetery Trust Fund which serves over 100 cemeteries.
Ed is survived by his children, Gene (Linda) Gill of Rolla, Marla (Fred) Schafer of Bowling Green, OH, and Greg (Roxann) Gill of Moscow Mills, MO. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Carol Gill of Salem, and grandchildren, Mary Ellen Arts, Julie Land, Rebecca, Caitlin, and Luke Gill, Jon and Jeff Schafer, and Brittan Schafer Maisch, Haley and Jodi Gill and Eddie Wofford and Lynn Winters. Great-grandchildren Amanda, Rachel, Julia, Jordan, Hunter, Gabrielle, Noah, Alyssa, Evan, Addison, Rowan, Harrison, and Macey, Eli, Ethan, Savannah, Eric, Brandon, and Jordan. Great-great grandchildren include Jonathan, Weston, Waylon, Naomi, Sawyer, Parker, Preston, Jackson and Brylee. Sister-in-law Ruth Campbell of Labadie, MO. Nieces, nephews, cousins. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eileen, and his son, David.
Funeral services for Edward Addison Gill will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the Salem Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Pastor Barry Baugh officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 5:00PM - 7:00PM at the Chapel. Interment will be held in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Central Missouri Honor Flight and/or the Salem United Methodist Church.
