Ed was born on December 2, 1925 in Imboden, Arkansas to Nathaniel Garrett and Vada (Forehand) Garrett. Ed attended school in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and received his GED.
After high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from February 16, 1944 until being honorably discharged on January 22, 1946.
Ed worked for the State of Kansas as a meat inspector for over 20 years until his retirement in 1992.
On July 25, 1994 he married Geneva Blanche Childs in Mountain Home, Arkansas. They made their home in Elgin for close to 20 years before he was preceded in death by his wife Blanche on September 4, 2012. Ed continued to live in Elgin until he moved to Wichita in 2016.
Ed was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kansas. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and his family; he also loved taking country drives, gardening and raising all different kinds of animals.
Ed is survived by five daughters; Patricia Herrington, Charlotte Dyer, Judy Drew, Carol Huddleston, and Terry Lee Willis; three sons, Christopher Garrett, Michael Garrett, and Edward Garrett II; three stepchildren; Tom Lockhart, Donna Murray, and Terry Lockhart; one sister, Alice Harris; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and his ex-wife Christine, and his ex-wife Judy Carol.
He is preceded in death by his wife G. Blanche Garrett, two sisters, Velma Holmes and Mary Perkins; two brothers, Denzil Pickett and Eugene Garrett, and stepson Mark Lockhart.
Church services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kansas with Brother Larrie Adams officiating. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented by the United States Navy.
The family has requested memorials to the New Life Baptist Church and can be left in care of the Dickens Family Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
