He was born in Montgomery Co. in East Texas and moved to Rockdale with his parents when he was 6. Attended Rockdale schools and upon graduation started college and at the same time started his teaching career. He obtained a teaching certificate by examination. He moved to Thorndale from Rockdale and lived there 12 years and at the time co-owned/operated Smith-Bunting Co. He owned and operated an automobile dealership in Taylor for more than 30 years. Married Maurine Leatherwood of Lampasas in June of 1933. He was a well known Taylor civic leader. Member of school board for 12 years and member of the city commission. Headed the industrial development committee of Taylor Chamber of Commerce, also a Chamber of Commerce president. Active member of First Christian Church and had served on the official board of the church for more than 30 years, several years as board president. Charter member of the Kiwanis Club, serving 2 years as president and 1 year as lieutenant governor of the Texas-Oklahoma district. He served as president of the Rotary Club, the Country Club and the old Automobile Asso.
