She was the daughter of Newt Wilson Bigham and Sarah Letitia (Easterling) Bigham and had ten brothers & sisters. Her father died when she was twelve years old. After graduating from Troy, TX high school she picked cotton to earn the money to attend Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, TX. She was the first member of her family to attend college. She taught school in various rural schools in Bell County. She met and married Raymond Mays and they had six children. bio by Frances Mays McFarland
