Donna passed away on August 1, 2018. She was born April 17, 1929, in Lake Park, IA, the daughter of Bob and Hazel (Miles) Herbert. She had fond memories of growing up on a farm and loved to share her childhood stories.
She was valedictorian of her graduating class and went on to attend Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. She moved to Des Moines where she soon met Ron Greenwood at Babes Restaurant. Donna and Ron moved to San Diego, CA, where they were married in 1952 at Forest Lawn. They returned to Iowa and settled in Des Moines, where Donna resided until her passing.
Donna stayed at home raising her three girls for many years. Ron was active in Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and because of this they enjoyed an active social life which included many friends and travels around the country and abroad.
In the early 70’s Donna took a job with the State of Iowa. She worked as an executive secretary with the Legislative Service Bureau. Donna loved her job and had close friendships with many of her co-workers. When Ron died in 1979 she took another part time weekend job at Broadlawns Hospital in the emergency room. During this time she was working 7 days a week which demonstrated a work ethic that inspired us all.
After Donna retired from the State of Iowa she continued to work part time until her early 80s because work wasn’t work, it was her passion.
In her retirement Donna enjoyed traveling with her long-time friend Mike Goedert. They had many adventures in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Donna was a member of Northgate Order of the Eastern Star and New Hope United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cheering on the grandkids at their sporting events, peanut M&Ms, breakfast on Sundays at HyVee with her family, and going to Dairy Queen for a banana split. She loved her daughters, her sons-in-law, and her grandkids. We loved her back and there is a huge hole in our hearts as we say goodbye to her. But we know she is in a better place and we are comforted in knowing that she is free from the cruel affliction of dementia.
Donna is survived by her daughters Sharon Kinton of CO, Ronna (Luis) Rivas of West Des Moines, Debbie (Robert) Conroy of West Des Moines; grandchildren Paul (Terry) Kinton, Ashlie (Luke) Angel, Mikki (Nate) Johnson, Aimee (Duke) Mountjoy, Nicholas (Annie) Rivas, Amanda Rivas, Joey Rivas, Katie (Chris) Lane, Bill Conroy, and David Conroy; great grandchildren Hunter and Chase Johnson and Annabelle Frederici, Jackson and Allison Lane. She is preceded in death by her husband Ron; her parents; her brother Bobby Herbert; and her great grandson Noah Rivas.
We would like to thank the amazing caregivers and nurses at Walnut Ridge Arbor, especially Chrissy Michael and Katie Carruthers, and also at Glen Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center where she resided for only a week but we know she was happy and well cared for.
Memorial contributions can be made to New Hope United Methodist or the Alzheimer’s Association.
