Paleontologist and Paleobotanist. He was a member of the faculty of the School of Mines at Columbia University for 24 years. He also helped found the Geological Society of America. Named in his honor are the goby, "Eucyclogobius newberryi", and the rainbow trout "Salmo newberryi". Lake Newberry, a glacial lake in New York, is also his namesake, as is Newberry Volcano in Oregon.
