Richard F. Schmitt, 83 of Watkins, passed away on Friday, November 10, 2017 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. Fr. Aaron Nett will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday and from 9:00 to 10:00 am on Wednesday at the Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins. Parish Prayers will be at 4:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetery in Shakopee.
Richard F. Schmitt was born on October 21, 1934 in Luxemburg Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. He was the son of Bernard and Anna (Rathmann) Schmitt. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954 to 1956.
On August 27, 1960, Richard was united in marriage to Helen Zollar at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Eden Valley. Richard farmed in Luxemburg Township and he operated “Richard’s Magic Rock Garden”, a hydroponic greenhouse in Watkins. He also dabbled as a real estate agent. Richard then did construction and concrete work, tearing down barns and refurbishing buildings with the reclaimed lumber. He also tore down silos and had a knack for building rock walls.
Richard was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins and served as an Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed wood carving, metal work art and folk art.
Richard is survived by his wife, Helen Schmitt of Watkins; children, Paul Schmitt of Watkins, Glenn (Julain) Schmitt of Shakopee, John Schmitt of Lewisburg, TN, and Chris Schmitt of Watkins; grandchildren, Nathan (Megan) Schmitt of Shakopee, Amanda Schmitt - USAF stationed in Italy, Robert Schmitt and Jennae Schmitt of Lewisburg, TN; brother, Don Schmitt of Watkins; sisters, Caroline Jung of Sun City West, AZ and Diane Haight of Lanesboro, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Allen Schmitt.
