Mr. Thomas David “Tommy” Simmons, age 68, husband of Suzette Lancaster Simmons of 179 Pinedale Court, Prosperity, passed away at his home, July 31, 2018.
Mr. Simmons was born in Union, January 16, 1950, a son of the late George Edward Simmons, Sr. and Daisy O’Shields Simmons Maness. He was a self-employed entrepreneur and owner of Simmons Properties. Over the years Mr. Simmons owned several businesses in the Union area including Mr.T’s Rentals and Fas T’s.
He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.
Mr. Simmons was a 1968 graduate of Union High School where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball. He played in the 1967 Shrine Bowl and in the North–South All Star game. He was an All-Conference athlete for three years, All-State in football and was also named All-American. Tommy was inducted into the Union High Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also inducted into the 2018 Union County Dixie Youth Baseball Hall of Fame. Tommy was an avid fan of the Union County High School softball team and the tennis team.
In 1972, he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree. While in college he played football for the Gamecocks and was a member of the 1969 ACC Championship team. Tommy continues to hold a record in the top 40 for the most career yardage gained. He remains a member of the USC Letterman’s Association.
Of all his life accomplishments, he was most proud of his 49-year marriage to his wife, Suzette. He is also survived by three daughters, Stacy S. Kicidis and husband Michael of Union; Audra S. Walker and husband Mike of Buffalo and Miranda B. Simmons of Prosperity; four grandchildren; David Kicidis, Dillon Sailors, Hannah Sailors and Kristin Kicidis; his mother-in-law, Ruth C. Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Simmons both of Buffalo; a niece Dawn S. Fallaw and husband Johnny of Union and their sons, John Simmons Fallaw and wife Hannah and Grayson Fallaw; an uncle, Lewis Earl O’Shields of Jacksonville, FL and a special family friend, David “Hoagie” Belue. Mr. Simmons was predeceased by a brother, George Edward Simmons, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, August 3, 2018, at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Mr. Mike Anthony and Mr. Richie Moye.
The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort, Darrell and Kelly Austin, Tommy Boyd, Mitch Bradley, Randell Faile, Eddie Harris, Tom and Mary Kent Jones, Ronnie and Linda Lee, Steve and Sandra (Patrick) Moss, Robin Price, Billy Whitney and Gamecock Football teammates.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.
