Her parents were there to welcome her, Martha Ellen Hammond Causey and Roy Augustus Causey, Sr., her mother-in-law, Maude McCallum Garner, and father-in-law, Frank Lee Garner. Dot and Gene started out with nothing at the ages of 18 and 19. They worked together and kept learning every day. Gene sold several things door to door to make a living for them and, at the same time, take correspondence courses to get an education.

Dot enjoyed sewing and made clothes for her family and some friends. Gene had a garden and Dot would can the food for winter. They had rabbits for a while then later Pekingese dogs. They took square dancing and round dance classes and danced for about 40 years making lifetime friends. Dot sewed square dance dresses not only for herself but for her friends.
