Sam was the eighth child born to John and Anna Barbata. He and his younger brother, Charles, owned and ran Barbata's Steak House on Ventura Blvd. in Woodland Hills for almost fifty years.

During WWII, Technical Sergeant, Sam Barbata, served with the 97th Bombardment Group as a B-17, top turret gunner. He flew a total of fifty-four missions over Europe and North Africa.

Sam married Iva Burgett, in a Las Vegas chapel on November 29, 1952, and remained married until Iva's death in 1998.
