Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. First served in the Civil War as a Captain in the 2nd Maine Volunteer Infantry. Later, he was promoted to Colonel, and commanded the 31st Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the battles of the Wilderness, and in the operations before Petersburg, Va.".
