He lived in McAlester, Oklahoma until nine years old then moved with his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1949, the family moved to Elk City, Oklahoma. Phillip graduated from junior high school in Elk City, Oklahoma in 1953. The Bell family then moved to Hayward, California in 1953. Phillip graduated from Hayward High School in 1956. He married his first love Jean Ellen Hedges on July 1, 1957 and loved her with final breath. In 1960, Phillip graduated from Armstrong College with a BBA degree in accounting with a minor in finance. After college he worked as an auditor at the United States General Accounting Office in San Francisco, California. When he returned to Elk City, he opened and ran Bells Flamingo Restaurant in Elk City on Route 66 from August 1961 to August 1988. He enjoyed visiting with the customers; it always made him happy to see them with a smile of approval when eating. After retiring from the restaurant business, until 1995, he acquired his Oklahoma real estate brokers and appraisers license.
He served on the Elk City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Board of Directors of Oklahoma Restaurant Association, the Elk City Planning and Zoning Committee, the Elk City Rodeo Association Board and the Elk City Airport Board of Directors.
Phillip had many hobbies including golfing, hunting, fishing, waterskiing, snow skiing, motorcycling, flying airplanes, horseback riding, fishing and traveling with his wife, Jeanie. After retiring, Phillip enjoyed teaching snow-skiing in Angel Fire, New Mexico. He loved teaching each of the grandchildren how to snow ski. His only warning to each of them was not to go faster than the teacher. His wife and three children were the driving force of his life.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Elk City, Oklahoma.
Celebration of Life service July 30, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Elk City, Oklahoma. Dr. Russell Duck will officiate. Interment at Fairlawn Cemetery in Elk City, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to the care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Cherishing his memory are his wife of sixty-one years, Jeanie of the home; children, Renee Jaelin Proffit and her husband, Daye of Kerrville, Texas, David Ernest Bell and his wife, Jean, Kathryn Lynn Bell all of Elk City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Randi Aery of Rockport, Texas, Jeremy Hudgens of Fort Worth, Texas, Joshua Rice of Duncan, Oklahoma, Amber Egan, Toni OHara, Jennifer Keyes all of Elk City, Oklahoma, Julie Blevins of Edmond, Oklahoma; eighteen great grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, Zoe, Sophie, Luci, Gus, Molli, Henry, Georgi, Brody, Carter, Jasper, Jovi, Kye, Krew, Kix, Quinn, Finley and one on the way; one great-great granddaughter, Stella; sister, Gayle Elliott of Elk City, Oklahoma.
He is preceded in death by parents, Ernest and Clara Bell.
