US Congressman. He was employed in a carriage factory in his native town from 1889 until 1892 when he became a traveling salesman, living in Michigan, New York and Massachusetts. He settled in Bangor, Maine in 1905 engaging in the retail sales of carriages and automobiles. He served as Bangor City councilman in 1912 and 1913; as alderman until 1914 and then as mayor of Bangor through 1915. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1932 and elected as the 3rd district's US congressional representative from March 4, 1933 through January 3, 1935. After losing his 1934 re-election bid, he was appointed as US Marshall for Maine from 1935 until his retirement in 1944. Upon his retirement, he returned to the automobile business and later became the president of the Utterback Corporation.
