He was a graduate of Lumberton High School (1938), UNC-Chapel Hill (1941 with a BA in chemistry), and Duke University Medical School (1944).

He served as a Captain in the United States Army on medical transport ships in the Pacific. It was on the U.S. Fred C. Ainsworth that he met Dorothy Ahlswede, an army nurse.

They married in 1947 and shared their lives together for 68 years.

After completing the surgical residency at Duke in 1951, he returned to Lumberton and practiced as a general thoracic and plastic surgeon for 36 years at Southeastern General Hospital (now Southeastern Health).

He was active in professional organizations, including: Medical Society of Robeson County, American College of Surgeons, NC Surgical Society, Seaboard Surgeons, and Duke Davison Club.

After retirement in 1987, he continued to serve the community by volunteering with Boys and Girls Club of Robeson County; he was presented the National Medallion for service to this organization.

He achieved Master Mason of St. Albans 14 A.M.E. in 1957 and was the recipient of the Veterans Emblem for 50 years of service.

Dr. Baker was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2005 for his service and contributions to our state.

In 2005, he and Dorothy moved to Southern Pines and remained active playing music and enjoying each other until Dorothy's death in 2015.

His Christian faith was the foundation for his life and always guided him.

A lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Lumberton, he was active from the time he was on the Cradle Roll in 1922.

As a child, he played the violin in church services, won the scripture declamation contest at the state level, and was the first boy to achieve the ambassador designation of the church's Royal Ambassadors program.

He served as: deacon, president of the men's fellowship Sunday School class, and president of Baptist Training Union.

He was devoted to his family and had a close relationship with his father, whom he idolized and joined in the operation room at an early age.

Upon his father's early death in 1945, Dr. Baker cared for his teenage sister and mother.
